Computer Program

The Computer and Adaptive Technology (C.A.T.) program is an innovative way of allowing people with disabilities to access computer-based education, entertainment and communication tools.

In addition to specialized software programs, participants can choose from a range of adaptive technologies such as touch screens, track/roller balls and Intellikeys keyboards.

What happens in C.A.T.?

Participants in C.A.T. learn:

  • how to use email
  • how to use the internet
  • word processing skills
  • literacy skills

How does C.A.T. work?

Participants in the program enjoy:

  • Independent work time
  • Customized learning
  • Internet café
  • Games and activities

Independent work time
Participants in C.A.T. work as independently as possible but can get assistance from the instructor if they need to. Each week, participants spend a hour in the lab working on various activities that are selected for their needs and interests.

Customized instruction

Each participant has his/her own unique set of skills and interests. The instructor assesses individual participants and then tailors a course to suit them. We encourage the participants to make decisions together with their key worker (if available) and the instructor.

Internet Café
The Internet Café creates a fun learning and social environment where participants come together for games, activities and contests. We hold Internet Cafés every 4th Tuesday of the month from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the head office - 1070 Roosevelt Crescent, North Vancouver.

Games and Activities
We offer many different games and activities for students in the C.A.T. program

The most popular programs include:

How do you assess a student's progress?

We assess each student 3 times a year, and review individual progress and personal goals. We send a progress report home to the family or caregiver.

Several of the students were interested in website design. In 2007, a group of students developed websites with the help of a summer student.

Our students designed and developed their own websites.
